Non-linear spectroscopy is a generalized term that can encompass a vast number of spectroscopy methods. This could include applications such as stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SRS), coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), multi-photon fluorescence spectroscopy, and terahertz spectroscopy to name a few. While not exclusively the case, the vast majority of non-linear spectroscopy lasers are used in microscopy applications, requiring that these lasers are single spatial mode to get diffraction limited performance out of the microscope objective. Because of the non-linear nature of these techniques, non-linear spectroscopy lasers must have extremely short pulses and therefore q-switched, and mode-locked lasers are typically preferable.
